Historic Montfoort and its beautiful castle are definitely worth a visit. This is a place where you will feel you've travelled back in time. Originally built in 1163 by Bishop Godefried van Rhenen, the castle had different functions over the centuries. It has been a home for old men, and a community school for girls. The castle also had many different owners over the years. Emperor Charles V owned it very briefly in 1545. During the disastrous year of 1672, the castle was invaded by French troops of Louis XIV, blown up and abandoned. What remains is an attractive entrance gateway with two heavy round towers. Today you can enjoy a drink or tasty meal in the authentic restaurant with outdoor seating area on the Kasteelplein square.
