Batteries on the Karnemelksloot
Just south-west of Naarden-Vesting are the twin batteries on the Karnemelksloot. These forts are not accessible to the public: one of the two batteries is home to a Scout troop, while the other has been abandoned.
The defence works on either side of the Karnemelksloot date back to 1787 and consist of two small islands surrounded by moats. Between 1873 and 1875, the islands were enlarged and guardhouses were installed. The twin forts were built to defend the dam lock in between. Dam locks were purely military structures, designed in this case to prevent flooded areas from draining.
