Fort H was a bunker built during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. Its purpose was to expand and improve the Muiden defence works. The period from 1874 until 1878 saw bomb-proof barracks, shelters and outbuildings added to the sconces. What makes these bunkers unique is that they were all but invisible from both the air and the front. Fort H was used as a storage depot for ammunition and other military gear – hence the heavy steel doors.
