Fort Vuren has proudly stood on the floodplains along the Waal for centuries. This defence work was built in 1844 as part of the New Dutch Waterline to prevent the enemy from advancing to the west. A few years later, a bomb-proof tower was added to the fort and a moat was dug. From that moment on, a drawbridge was the only means of access.
